On 14th August 2013, His Excellency Fujio Samukawa, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi handed over School Blocks for Junior classes at Umodzi Katubza Primary School at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District.

Umodzi Katubza Primary School situated at Dzaleka Refugee Camp is managed by the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Malawi with support from UNHCR. They offer education and counselling services to children who have been forcibly displaced from their home countries. Unfortunately, efforts to provide better education services are challenged by the increasing number of refugees joining the camp. In order to lessen this challenge, the Government of Japan awarded JRS Malawi a grant amounting to USD89,176 (about K32 million) under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects for the Construction of School Blocks for Junior Classes at Umodzi Katubza Primary School.

This grant has enabled JRS Malawi to construct three classroom blocks, three toilets blocks and procured furniture for the new classrooms. It is envisaged that this project will contribute to the reduction of classroom overcrowding and the class size will de-crease from 100 to 60. All in all, the right to access quality education among children who have been forcibly displaced from their countries will be fulfilled. The ceremony was graced by the National Coordinator for Refugees, from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. Charles Mopiwa and witnessed by Mr. George Kuchio, UNHCR Malawi Representative.
